Mark Twain in Concert
Growing up I was tremendously impressed with Hal Holbrook’s one-man show called Mark Twain Tonight. I also read his book about the production, and many years later I got to see him perform it in person. He always portrayed Twain at the age of 70. In planning this concert act, I conceived Twain as a younger man, around the age of 40. The material I chose was taken from his earliest humorous pieces offering facetious “Good Advice.” The show featured Joe and Robert Raney (as Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn) and Kathy Aughenbaugh (as Mary, Tom’s cousin) performing a couple of songs from my musical Tom Sawyer and took place on December 1, 2001, at the Big Bear Lake Performing Arts Center in California.
