Tom Sawyer

I began adapting Mark Twain’s classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer into a musical when I was nine years old (1957) and continued tinkering with it into my teens. (A narrated demonstration of this early score appears in Disc One of my Original Songs.) FORTY YEARS LATER I was asked to create a show for a dance studio in Big Bear Lake, California, so I dug this project out of my “trunk” and revised it. Many of my childhood songs remain in the score. I produced, directed, conducted, and stage managed this version at the Performing Arts Center in the summer of 1997. The cast was magnificent, and the audience loved it. This “live” recording is less than studio quality, but the complete script is included below. (A narrated demo of this final score appears on Discs 12 and 13 of my Original Songs.)
